When Corporate Tweeting Goes Bad

Just a friendly reminder to make sure your company’s twitter account password stays secure. Otherwise you’ll have 200+ porn tweets within a few hours. Oops.

Bad ‘Za

So, I read about this the other day, and I’m hoping it’s just a rumor, or some designer’s crazy idea that will meet it’s match against sensible minds. Pizza Hut, with it shrink revenues hit hard by a poor economy, is working on rebranding itself as a more “hip” food alternative. One of the ideas being bandied about is this naming change from Pizza Hut to simply The Hut.

I’m all for doing interesting branding moves, especially when you have as solid of image recognition (the red roof) as Pizza Hut does. But… The Hut? Like… Pizza the Hut?

If your site is scary, it should be because it’s about 30 days of night or Saw. These are really good. Thanks Dan

An Oldie, but a Goodie

I wish I had this kind of time… is it really that funny if you’re not in the advertising business? Probably not, but I don’t care because I like it!

Everyone can be a graphic designer 2 - the sequel

Honestly….. I was searching the internet for a topical design enhancement formula and found just the thing I was looking for. I think this will make the Mrs. a big Rick fan again.

Everyones can be a graphic designer.

Whether we like it or not the business is changing, clients want a means to update there digital media message, and don’t want to pay a ton to do so. - Just a few years ago it was taboo for a designer to create a Powerpoint presentation, I mean god forbid we use any Microsoft products and If you have a PC you’d best hide it in the back room under the interns desk. YES, we create snappy looking Powerpoint - Word - Publisher templates for our clients and yes we do have a PC, (I’ll bet you can guess where it resides.) A couple of years ago it hit me like a ton of t-squares, our clients want and we provide is our motto and believe it or not, we still get payed our hourly rate to create in Office and or CS4. The best thing of all is that we don’t have to suffer through the bad clipart and 18 pt brush script with fluorescent pie charts.

There are people still in the industry that just want to create logos and really bitchin brochures, who wouldn’t, but…. now that the brochures quantities have gone from printing 10,000 to only 100 (if your lucky and the end product is not just an optimized PDF) and you can buy a crappy logo on-line for $69, we have to differentiate ourselves as offering more then good design, we need to offer a thought process that ultimately produces great design. I’m sold on the fact that its the simple creative process and flexible services that keep clients coming back.

Make The Effort

Chain stores and restaurants are everywhere. There’s a reason for it: They’re good. Unfortunately, by their sheer number, they crowd out the independent, making them easy to miss. It’s important to seek out the local shop. It might be cheaper to do business online but the local guy loses, and you are left holding your breath while opening the box the UPS Driver just dropped off (have you ever had something delivered only to discover it wasn’t as you expected — but kept the item because it was easier to take the loss than send it back?).

National chains have raised the bar for availability and price but locally you can watch the craftsman push the buttons and twist the dials. The last time I checked, I couldn’t speak with the president of B&H Photo in New York, but Joe, over at Tempe Camera has given treats to my dog and knows her name. Guess where I spend.

The Big Kids are big enough. By supporting The Little Guy, you can help him grow big.

Tony Blei Photography, like R Squared, is a member of the 3/50 Project. It’s a big world, but when I can I’m staying home.

A Story About a Logo

Once upon a time there was a company called Morgan Stanley and there was a company called Smith Barney. Then, the economy turned south. Now, when a big money-loving company and another big money-loving company love money very very much, sometimes they will merge. And, when they merge they need a new identity. And, sometimes, they will create a logo so unbelievably boring that it makes your head collapse on itself.

I don’t get it? What’s the point? Did they just do it in Microsoft Word? I mean, I understand that the banking industry is in turmoil, and it’s not exactly the place to be looking for creative, out of the box, design. Nor is it the place to be spending big bucks on design at the moment. But, good-freaking lord! Really, that’s the best you could come up with? Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…..

The End.

Shopping Local Saves Jobs

Thanks for writing this, Susan. When people spend locally, not only are they helping the business owners, they are helping the employees, too. When businesses have customers, they get to hire help, which allows people to spend money … it’s a nice cycle to start!
